Going Grid Scale: Battery Projects Boost Grid Stability in Texas

As energy demand grows, so does the need to scale up battery energy storage systems (BESS) for on-demand, clean power. Our battery energy storage system (BESS) project portfolio in Texas is rapidly growing, helping to ensure that Prologis customers and the local communities in which we operate have access to reliable power.

Recently, we welcomed Arlington Mayor Jim Ross, Texas State Representative Chris Turner, and other government officials, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) executives and real estate professionals for a “Flip the Switch” event to celebrate our inaugural energy storage project in Arlington, Texas. The 9.95-megawatt (MW) system will supply power to the grid, which provides electricity to commercial and residential customers. The amount of power this system can provide is equivalent to the electricity demand of more than 1,700 households. This project exemplifies the power of collaboration, innovation and strategic partnerships in driving forward urban energy solutions.

Working Together to Strengthen the Grid

Located at the Prologis Interchange 20 facility, this battery project ventured into uncharted territory, introducing new technology to the Texas market as the first project to be co-located with a newly constructed distribution center. Despite an evolving regulatory environment and logistical complexities, the project thrived due to stakeholder collaboration. Strategic real estate partnerships were essential in site selection, entitlement acquisition and navigating land development challenges; cross-functional collaboration between our Energy Team and Dallas-based teams allowed for rapid decision-making, streamlined execution and cost efficiencies; our EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) partners Ravenvolt and FlexGen played a crucial role in project execution, contributing technical expertise and operational support.

In addition, we are very appreciative of the partnership with the City of Arlington. Projects like this one support economic growth, helping attract and retain businesses through lower energy prices and grid resilience.

Maximizing Value Through Innovation

With the development of the warehouse already underway, the Energy Team worked closely with the local real estate team and civil engineer on an innovative design that seamlessly integrates the battery system into the property. Combining forces, the teams developed an optimized and refined site plan. The scalable battery technology allowed for swift government approval and construction of the system so that it could begin providing value to Prologis, the utility and the surrounding community.

Continued Investment in Energy Storage 

In addition to the BESS at Interchange 20, Prologis has three additional Prologis BESS projects set to be energized this year. In fact, our company has a total of ten projects that will be switched on by the end of 2025, bringing our BESS portfolio in the state to 100 MW strong – equivalent to the energy needed to power more than 17,000 homes.
