Columbus Economic Drivers

Columbus is an epicenter of U.S. population and industry. It has a total population of 2.2 million and is the fastest-growing city in the Midwest. The five-year growth rate is expected to be 4.5%. Importantly for logistics customers, the warehouse labor force is expected to grow by 12.8% over the next 10 years, adding over 6,000 workers. Hourly wage rates in Columbus are 1.5% less than the national average.

The main logistics driver in the area is Rickenbacker International Airport. One of the only cargo-dedicated airports in the world, it offers direct flights to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Norfolk Southern and CSX, two of the nation’s largest rail providers, have rail hubs at the port that provide direct access to many major East Coast seaports. Further, because I-70 passes through the city of Columbus, there is freeway access to 46% of the country’s population within a one-truck-driver shift.
