UK Logistics Building Wins Prestigious Award
On March 7, Prologis Park Dunstable DC2 won the Regional Award–Western Europe at the BREEAM Awards 2018, which recognize exceptional sustainability efforts. Dunstable DC2 was the first industrial building to be accredited “Outstanding” under the BREEAM 2014 guidelines, helping Prologis Park Dunstable become the first large-scale distribution park to be fully certified as BREEAM “Outstanding.”
The judges selected Dunstable DC2 to highlight important sustainability improvements in a mature industrial sector. At Dunstable DC2, operational carbon emissions were cut by 51 percent (in comparison to 2013 building regulations), resulting in comparable operational energy cost savings for the tenant. The building has an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A(9), the highest level of energy efficiency, plus it is equipped with solar photovoltaic arrays that generate over 200,000 kilowatt hours of free electricity for the facility’s occupant.
“BREEAM certification is one of the three key metrics that guide our design and construction methodology, along with the reduction of operational carbon emissions and embodied carbon mitigation,” said Martin Cooper, vice president, Project Management for Prologis UK. “We wanted to set a new standard for buildings in the industrial logistics sector, and Dunstable DC2 was designed to demonstrate that a logistics facility can reduce the customer’s energy costs and minimize environmental impact.”
Prologis UK was named alongside such developments as Four St. Pancras Square and the GSK Centre for Sustainable Chemistry in Nottingham, placing Dunstable DC2 at the forefront of sustainable developments in Western Europe. “We are delighted to receive this accolade,” said Simon Cox, sustainability officer for Prologis UK. “Sustainability is a core part of our business philosophy at Prologis, and we have been building sustainability features into our logistics buildings for the past decade.”
