It is also one of Japan’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities. The number of young people in Fukuoka is expanding faster than any other Japanese city, and the metropolis has the highest rate of startups in the country. The metro area’s $100 billion economy is centered around wholesale and retail businesses and the service, food and beverage industries.

Located on the northern shore of the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, Fukuoka is closer to Shanghai than Tokyo. This proximity increases the flow of tourists and trade from continental Asia and makes Fukuoka an important and growing hub for distribution, warehousing and logistics operations. Fukuoka is, after Tokyo, the second most popular Japanese location for international business conferences.

Fukuoka is served by bullet trains and major expressways. Hakata Port handled 897,000 TEUs in 2016 and is Japan’s top port for marine produce, with 45 billion yen worth of wholesale fish sold. Fukuoka Airport, known as one of the world’s most convenient, is Japan’s fourth busiest, with more than 21 million passengers and 250,000 metric tons of cargo passing through in 2015.
