Antwerp is one of Belgium’s leading economic engines.  The Port of Antwerp is a major hub for the shipment of dry goods, cargo, chemicals and petroleum products. It is the second-largest cargo port in Europe and the seventh largest in the world. As a result, and despite the city’s small population of about 500,000, it is one of the most important logistics and distribution centers in the world.

Major industries in Antwerp—most of which are concentrated near the port—include diamonds, chemicals and oil refining. Antwerp sits 50 miles inland from the North Sea on the Scheldt River and benefits from a network of inland waterways that extend shipping’s reach into Europe’s interior.

With a population of 11 million, Belgium is a highly industrialized and urbanized economy that is open to trade. Antwerp has the largest population in Flanders.
